Rashford, who burst on the scene at the end of the 2015/16 season, has not been consistent enough this season. He has failed to cement a place in United's starting XI and his relationship with Mourinho appear to be strained.
Guardian's Ben Fisher reflects on Rashford's season: "Jose Mourinho’s tough love, if you will, does not seem to have struck a chord with the 20-year-old and really it is no surprise he has struggled to produce his best."
The arrival of Alexis Sanchez in January has limited Rashford's playing time even further, with the Chilean automatically becoming a key player in Mourinho's team.
Fisher is afraid that Alexis' presence will interfere with Rashford's development: "Glimpses of grace have been enough to whet the appetite for the long-term view, though, while the arrival of Alexis Sanchez has undoubtedly been detrimental to the immediate development of a player who has shown he is still raw in areas."
This summer's World Cup in Russia will offer a chance to Rashford to prove his talent and stake his claim for a place in the United XI.
Fisher expects Rashford to deliver in Russia, as he always does for England: "His double in the win over Liverpool offered his manager a timely reminder of his quality at club level but arguably his best displays have been for England. The England forward will feel he has much to show in Russia."
